BDS (Bachelor of dental surgery) is an undergraduate medical course under dentistry. It is one of the most reputed courses after MBBS. The duration of the course lasts from 5 years, including the internship period of one year.

The BDS course mainly revolves around several dental procedures related to diseases developing in the oral cavity, as well as for cosmetic purposes. It deals with treatment, prevention, and diagnosis of oral diseases. Proper positioning of teeth and jaw, oral beauty and hygieneare also considered. It further includes radiology, oral medicine, community dentistry, pathology, and much more.

Admission in BDS also deals withstudy of dental anatomy, dental materials, oral Histology, and Dental surgeries. Regular dentistry routine includes group discussions, lectures, several practical’s, assessments, conferences, exams, and internship.

BDS program enrollment can either be through NEET or individual entrance exams taken by colleges.

  • Its eligibility criteria include (10 + 2) with main subjects that as Biology, Chemistry, Physics with English.
  • The student should be able to score a minimum of more than 50% in 10+2.
  • The minimum age of the candidate should be 17 at the time of sending application.
 
Since BDS has good career scope, a massive number of students apply for admission every year. Some students may wish to apply for tuition classes for appearing in the BDS entrance exam.

Four years of full-time course of BDS is similar to MBBS in terms of syllabus of 1st year.

  • 1st year – General Anatomy with Embryology and Histology, General Human Physiology and Biochemistry, Dental Anatomy, Embryology, and Oral Histology.
  • 2nd year – General Pathology and Microbiology, General and Dental Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Dental Materials, Preclinical Conservative Dentistry, Preclinical Prosthodontics, and Crown and Bridge.
  • 3rd year – General Medicine, General Surgery, Oral Pathology, and Oral Microbiology.
  • 4th year – Oral Medicine and Radiology, Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, Periodontology, Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge, Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Oral Maxillofacial Surgery, Public Health Dentistry.

 

  1. After successfully finishing the four-year BDS course, the student can work under supervision for a year to gain experience or can start up his clinic.
  2. Working under an experienced dentist is preferable in the beginning. However, there is a high demand for a dentist in all the parts of the world as people are getting more and more conscious of dental hygiene.
  3. Specific areas like dental clinics, hospitals, private practices dental product manufacturers demand BDS graduates.
  4. While some research institutes also require the need for dental surgery, graduates can go for MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) to have deep knowledge in operative dentistry, oral medicine, radiology, prosthodontics, oral implantology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, or many more.
  5. Since,BDS is one of reputed branch in the medical field after MBBS, a student can pursue dentistry after UG degree or can continue practicing with higher education.

  3. Government Dental College and Hospital (Mumbai, Maharashtra) : Colleges rank 3 out of 15. Its annual fee is 55000 INR. It offers BDS course and 8 MDS courses.
  4. Government Dental College and Hospital (Aurangabad, Maharashtra) : Annual fees are 69750 INR it offers BDS course and 6 MDS courses.
  5. Dr. DY Patil Dental College and Hospital (Pune, Maharashtra) : It offers BDS and 10 MDS courses. Annual fees of BDS is 550000 INR,and Annual fees of MDS course is 1200000 INR.
  6. Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj ShikshanSanstha Dental College (Aurangabad, Maharashtra) : It offers BDS course and 6 MDS courses. Annual fee of BDS and MDS is 250000 INR.
