BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery)
Bachelor of Unani medicine and surgery (BUMS) is 5 to 5.5-year (including internship) duration course in medical stream. The process of admission in BUMS college is followed by counselling after clearing the entrance exam. The Unani medicines have a good history from around 6000 years ago. It is believed to be very powerful medicine as some of the diseases can be treated by Unani medicine only.
At some places, it is also called as ‘Hikmat’ or ‘Unani Tibb’. Unani Medicine System is one of the oldest medicine methods ever from the ancient period, and even today, it is popular. Unani has been 4th most popular medicinal systems after Allopathy, Ayurveda and Homeopathy. Unani medicine is also termed as an alternative medicine which is capable of providing prevention and cure to many diseases including, Eczema, Vitiligo, Rheumatoid, Leucoderma, Arthritis, Psoriasis, Bronchial Asthma, Jaundice, etc.
Unani Medicine System states that the human body has four elements, which are our blood, phlegm yellow bile, black bile. Many colleges in India and abroad offer Diploma and Degree courses in Unani medicine. Some of the top recruiting companies are: –

BUMS Course Eligibility
There is an eligibility criterion which a student must fulfil to get admission in an Unani college. The student should score minimum 50% marks in 10 + 2 with Biology Chemistry and Physics as core subjects. However, candidates who know language Urdu or have studied Urdu in 12th grade are given more preference. The minimum age limit of the candidate should be 17 years. Eligible candidates can appear for state level exam (KEAM), CPAT, CPMEE or NEET (National level exam). After clearance of the exam, the student undergoes a personal interview where his skills are observed. Distance mode education system can also be counted in for undergraduate programs in BUMS. Average fees may vary between 50000 to 6.3 lacs for the complete course. The average starting salary for the degree holders can be from 2 to 10 lacs per annum.

The fees structure of BUMS courses ranges between INR 50,000 to INR 5,00,000 per annum.
BUMS Course Syllabus
The complete course and syllabus of BUMS are divided into three parts, which are also termed as three professions having a varying syllabus.
- Syllabus of profession 1: Tashreeh-ul-Badan (Anatomy), Munafe-ul-aza (Physiology), Umoor-e-Tabaiya, Mantiq, FalsafawaHaiyat, Arabic, Tarikh-e-Tib.
- Syllabus of profession 2: IlmulAdvia I (Kulliyat&Mufradat), IlmulAdvia II (Murakkabat&Saidla), IlmulAmraz and Sareeriyat (Pathology & Bed side clinic), IlmulSamoom and Tib-e-Qanooni (Medical Jurisprudence & Toxicology), Tahaffuzi-o-SamajiTib [Hygiene (Hifzan-e-Sehat)]
- Syllabus of profession 3: Moalijat I, Moalijat II, Jarahiyat (Surgery), Amraz-e-Ain, Uzn, AnafwaHalaq (Ophthalmology & ENT), IlmulQabalaNiswanwaAtfal (Gyae, Obs. &Paed.)
The whole syllabus covers Regimental therapy (llaj -bit- Tadbeer), Venesection, Cupping, Diaphoresis, Diuresis, Turkish bath, Massage, Cauterization, Purging, Emesis, Exercise, Leeching, Pharmacotherapy (llaj-bit-Dawa), Dietotherapy (llaj-bit-Ghiza), Surgery (Jarahat), etc. Student can also opt for post graduate Diploma in Unani medicine and surgery or get a ‘Master of medicine’ in Unani or a doctor in medicine in Unani.
BUMS Career Scope
One must carry on with his internship and higher practice after finishing the degree to be textbook in Unani medicines. It would be much easier to get a job if you have a good experience.
If one becomes a professional in Unani medicine, then he can have a very fulfilling career. Many people working in Manufacturing and Research field require such professionals. After getting a degree, you can get job profile as Hakeem, consultant, Lecturer, Scientist, Therapist, Private practice, Pharmacist, Medical assistant, Public health specialist, Spa director. Alternatively, he can also work as an employer in Unani medical colleges, can open a medicine store or a clinic of his own, can join the Healthcare community or Unani consultancy.
Student can also start working in a government hospital or private hospital for more experience. If none of these is suitable, then you can go for being a Lecturer, Teacher or a Researcher. Some of the high-profile jobs include being a pharmacist who earns 4 to 5 lacs annually. Becoming a therapist is also an open option for Unani degree holders. You can give counselling about drug addictions and mental health and earn up to 6 to 7 lacs annually. On the other hand, working as a scientist or a researcher in a commercial or government sector will get you 3 to 4 lacs per year.
