Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery which is commonly known as MBBS is an undergraduate Medical degree course that deals with the study of Allopathic Medicine and Surgery. This undergraduate medical education program is designed with a clear vision and goal, the main aim of this program is to create Medical Graduates possessing requisite skills, knowledge, attitudes, responsiveness and values, that enables medical graduates to function appropriately and effectively as a physician of the first contact of the community while being globally relevant. MBBS is one of the most prestigious medical degrees all over the world since it provides financial security to the aspirant.

To study MBBS in India an aspirant has to go through a national level entrance test NEET-UG conducted by NTA (National testing agency), to participate in NEET-UG students must qualify senior secondary (12th standard) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology (zoology, botany), and English with 50% for general category candidates and 40 % for SC, ST, and OBC category candidates from a recognized board. After qualifying NEET-UG with prescribed percentile in individual categories qualified students have to go through centralized counseling conducted on the national level and state level. National level NEET-UG Counseling is conducted by the Medical Counseling Committee i.e. MCC on behalf of DGHS (director-general health of services) and State level NEET-UG Counseling is conducted by DME (director medical educations) of respective states.

The course extends for five and a half years, which includes 1 year of compulsory rotational internship. There is a total of nine semesters, where each semester lasts for six months and has attendance days of one hundred and twenty days. The main objective of the course is to give candidates an in-depth and thorough knowledge of the physiological and pathological actions in a human body. A medical aspirant studying M.B.B.S learns through both the theoretical and practical experiences taught in various classes.

Eligibility Criteria for MBBS in India

For a candidate to gain entrance into a medical college:

  1. The Candidate must be at least 17 years of age at the time of admission and not more than 25 (unless specified).
  2. Candidate must pass senior secondary or  Class 12th with a minimum of 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry, Biology for General Category and 40% for the reserved category (Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe) respectively.
  3. Candidate must pass the qualifying Exam National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) conducted by NTA.

MBBS Admission in India

The student must qualify in NEET for admission in MBBS. After qualifying for the NEET exam, students must appear for MBBS counseling. There are other exams such as AIIMS, JIPMER for medical college admission. Students can also appear for the entrance examination for seven AIIMS in India.

According to the latest figures from the Medical Council of India, a total of 272 government MBBS colleges across the country will open their doors to candidates in 2024, offering an aggregate of 41,388 medical seats through the NEET examination. Additionally, NEET 2024 will allocate 76,928 seats across 532 colleges, encompassing both government and private institutions, further expanding opportunities for aspiring medical professionals.

Mbbs Doctor salary in India ranges between ₹ 0.5 Lakhs to ₹ 12.2 Lakhs with an average annual salary of ₹ 7.2 Lakhs.

The cost of an MBBS course in India varies significantly, ranging from approximately INR 5,00,000 to INR 50,00,000. This disparity is primarily due to the type of institution, whether public or private.

The candidates need to secure a certain number of marks to be eligible for admission. For general category, the minimum marks required in NEET 2023 for MBBS was 720-137 and for the reserved category, it was 136-107.

For MBBS admission 2024, candidates must pass the NEET which is the only entrance exam required by many medical colleges in India. Candidates must have completed at least Class 12 with the essential disciplines of Physics, Chemistry, and Biology for MBBS admission

All private medical colleges have a fixed 15% of their total offered seats reserved for MBBS admissions through the management quota. These 15% MBBS seats are allotted for students who want to take admission in the course through the management quota.
