Overview of MBBS Course

Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery which is commonly known as MBBS is an undergraduate Medical degree course that deals with the study of Allopathic Medicine and Surgery. This undergraduate medical education program is designed with a clear vision and goal, the main aim of this program is to create Medical Graduates possessing requisite skills, knowledge, attitudes, responsiveness and values, that enables medical graduates to function appropriately and effectively as a physician of the first contact of the community while being globally relevant. MBBS is one of the most prestigious medical degrees all over the world since it provides financial security to the aspirant.

To study MBBS in India an aspirant has to go through a national level entrance test NEET-UG conducted by NTA (National testing agency), to participate in NEET-UG students must qualify senior secondary (12th standard) with Physics, Chemistry, Biology (zoology, botany), and English with 50% for general category candidates and 40 % for SC, ST, and OBC category candidates from a recognized board. After qualifying NEET-UG with prescribed percentile in individual categories qualified students have to go through centralized counseling conducted on the national level and state level. National level NEET-UG Counseling is conducted by the Medical Counseling Committee.i.e. MCC on behalf of DGHS (director-general health of services) and State level NEET-UG Counseling is conducted by DME (director medical educations) of respective states.

The course extends for five and a half years, which includes 1 year of compulsory rotational internship. There is a total of nine semesters, where each semester lasts for six months and has attendance days of one hundred and twenty days. The main objective of the course is to give candidates an in-depth and thorough knowledge of the physiological and pathological actions in a human body. A medical aspirant studying M.B.B.S learns through both the theoretical and practical experiences taught in various classes.

MBBS Admission in Indian Colleges

Medical Aspirants who wish to get admission in M.B.B.S course must take the national level competitive entrance exam, NEET. For enrolment in this course, it is essential to quality National Eligibility cum Entrance Test. As per Supreme court’s directives, NEET allows admission to the majority of government, deemed, private, and central universities in India. The M.B.B.S admission seats in respective colleges are allotted as based on merit rank in the NEET exam.

Over sixty thousand M.B.B.S seats are available every year across four hundred and seventy medical institutions. But more than twelve lakh students take this exam every year, and hence, the competition is high, and only a few percentages of total candidates grab a seat in the college of their choice.

MBBS Colleges in India

  1. AIIMS: This is one of the most prominent MBBS colleges in India. AIIMS conducts its entrance exam every year and is not included in the NEET umbrella unlike the majority of Indian Medical Colleges. AIIMS conducts national level UG entrance exam to fill 1200 seats.
    2.JIPMER: JIPMER is also excluded from NEET, and to take admission in this college, you’ll need to take JIPMER entrance test which is an online, and computer-based analysis. There are around 200 seats which are filled for both OCI and Indian Nationals.
    3. Top Medical Institutions under NEET: For admission in rest of the colleges in India, the students will need to take NEET exam.
