Doctor of Pharmacy

Pharm.D which is also referred to as Doctor of Pharmacy is a doctoral degree course in Pharmacy approved by Govt. of India in the year 2008, The Pharmacy Council of India is the apex body governing it. Pharm. D course is a six-year program that includes a total of 5 years of learning, enriching followed by one year of practical learning internship. Pharm. D is considered the only doctoral degree that can be obtained in India right after passing 10 + 2 qualification exams. In addition, B.Pharm graduates are also pursuing Pharm.D by getting admissions to the lateral entry programs. The course prepares the eligible candidates in the area of patient management, medication therapy and enhances patient outcomes.

Pharm. D Eligibility Criteria For 6 year course

  • Candidates from any state / national education board must have completed the 10 + 2 level of education. They should have studied physics and chemistry as compulsory subjects with additional subjects being Mathematics or Biology. They must have completed 17 years of age during the year of admission.
  • Applicants with a Pharmacy diploma also apply for Pharm D course provided they fulfill all other conditions as well.

Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate)

Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate) is a 3-year professional post-graduate course in the pharmacy discipline, open to eligible Pharmacy graduates, completed from a PCI-recognized institute. The course also includes 1 year of compulsory residency or internship. The course is divided into two phases, one of which includes theoretical study in the first phase, and the other includes a residency/ internship program to be completed by the enrolled students.

Eligibility Criteria For Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate) 3-year course

  • Candidates passed in Bachelor of Pharmacy course from an Indian Pharmacy Council-recognized institution are eligible for Pharm. D 
  • They must have completed higher secondary education, i.e. 10 + 2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or Biology subjects.

Pharm. D Admission Process

As part of the general admission procedure an ideal candidate to enroll in the Pharm. D program should have cleared a relevant entrance examination, group discussion and personal interview conducted by any university at State and national levels. Unlikely some institutes in India also have their own admission criteria, and offer admission on the basis of the student’s score in such qualifying tests.

Pharm. D Syllabus

As per regulations of PCI, the Pharm. D course curriculum is divided into two phases as under:

  • D Phase I – Theoretical learning
  • D Phase II – Internship or residency training during sixth year involving posting in speciality units

Pharm. D Career perspectives

The Pharm. D program is considered one of the highest paying markets as it provides a good return on investment due to the availability of various jobs and helps individuals to land in a successful job after completion of the program. Students can practice and perform as a pharmacist at government as well as private hospitals and institutions. Job opportunities are also available at NGOs working in the health sector, especially in rural areas. Depending on the job or scale of business that the individual has started the industry can provide packages starting from Rs. 3.5 lakh to Rs. 10 lakh per annum. The possible job roles after completion of the program are:

  • Research Scientist
  • Medical Writer
  • Clinical Pharmacist
  • Analytical Chemist
  • Drug Inspector
  • Pharmacy Manager
  • Quality Assurance Manager
  • Regulatory Affairs Manager

As per the recent updates there is a huge requirement of Pharm. D graduates especially in India where there are vast drug related issues, irrational drug use and non-compliance to therapy among the suffering patients due to various chronic illnesses. Various doctors also believe that pharmaceutical care along with technical expertise of clinical pharmacist is the ultimate tool to achieve better patient care.

As there is drastic change in society’s health care needs it’s expanding rapidly so the current generation doctors feel that there should increasing emphasis on provision of healthcare through drug information and poison information and other pharmacovigilance activities. The pharma industry is one of the multibillion dollar industries throughout the globe where the business is worth more than 1.4 billion by way of clinical trials. The Pharm. D graduates have opportunities to be entrepreneurs starting their own community pharmacy.
